USI Help

Every student in Australia whose studies are nationally recognised must have a USI. It can be a bit confusing. This page will answer your questions about your USI.

What is a USI?

Your USI (Unique Student Identifier) is a special number issued by the Australian Government.

Here is some information from the Australian Government about the USI.

The Unique Student Identifier or USI is a reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters that:

  • creates a secure online record of your recognised training and qualifications gained in Australia, even from different training organisations
  • will give you access to your training records and transcripts
  • can be accessed online, anytime and anywhere
  • is free and easy to create and
  • stays with you for life

You will have the same USI even if you go to another school.

Your USI is used to track all your training in Australia. It will not appear on your certificate or record of results.

Must I get a USI?

All students who are undertaking nationally recognised training in Australia must get a USI.

If you do not provide us with your USI, by Australian law, we will not be able to issue you with your certificate or statement of results.

Do I already have a USI?

You might already have a USI if you have studied before in Australia in another school. You should contact your previous school to find out if you have a USI. If so, they can tell you what it is.

How do I make a USI?

You can get your USI by following these instructions. If you have any problems, your teacher can help you.

  1. Go to the Australian Government USI page here: www.usi.gov.au
  2. Click ‘I am a student‘
  3. Click ‘I want to create a USI‘
  4. Click on ‘I am an Australian student‘ or ‘I am an international student‘
  5. Click ‘Create your USI now‘
  6. Click ‘I agree to the Terms and Conditions‘
  7. Click ‘Create USI‘
  8. Enter your personal details
  9. Enter your passport and visa details
  10. Set your password and secret questions
  11. Write down your USI

Can my school make a USI for me?

Yes!
